Volunteer Opportunities

South Asian American Justice Collaborative (SAAJCO)

In 2024, the South Asian American Justice Collaborative (SAAJCO) was established as a national legal nonprofit dedicated to fighting alongside our communities for the civil and human rights of the South Asian diaspora. We seek to advance this mission through impact litigation, direct legal services, and community engagement.

This April, SAAJCO is launching their first programs, including a Resource Hotline & Consultations, and are seeking law students to help build the foundation for this critical work and staff the hotline.

SAAJCO is currently seeking Volunteer Attorneys and Law Students who are passionate about driving change and advocating for justice. They are looking for volunteers to help strengthen our organization, staff our hotline, provide consultations, and handle pro bono matters in collaboration with partner organizations.

If you're interested in supporting SAAJCO, please complete the form below.

Affirmative Action on the SCOTUS Docket:

NASALSA Proudly participates in and supports the Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ) campaign to keep affirmative action, which is on the docket of this session’s SCOTUS.

RELEASE OF THE U.S.’S OLDEST PRISONER OF THE WAR ON TERROR, SAIFULLAH PARACHA:

“The United States has released the U.S. military’s oldest prisoner of the war on terror, a 75-year-old businessman who was held for nearly two decades as a suspected sympathizer of Al Qaeda but was never charged with a crime. His transfer, in a secret military mission announced by the Pakistani government on Saturday, culminated months of negotiations to arrange his return. The Pentagon declined to comment. It was not known if Biden administration officials imposed any security restrictions on Mr. Paracha, but a lawyer swiftly released a photo of the former prisoner sitting in a McDonald’s in Karachi, Pakistan.” - @nytimes

We wish Mr. Paracha and his family (including his son Uzair, whose wrongful conviction on similar grounds of material support to terrorism was overturned in 2018) well and reflect on the ongoing impact of the War on Terror for South Asians in the United States, as well as the role that the next generation of our attorneys can take to create a more just system for all - regardless of race or faith.

Adnan Syed:

We are thrilled to hear the incredible news that Pakistani American Adnan Syed’s case was overturned and vacated in Fall 2022. Today we reflect on the War on Terror and the unknown number of detained, harassed, targeted, surveilled, arrested, incarcerated and disappeared South Asians.
